Guidance published at the end of 2012 by Road Safety Minister Stephen Hammond, will allow local councils to alter speed limits according to local traffic conditions. It is hoped that several factors will combine to improve road safety, and to give local communities confidence that their local authority, whilst keeping safety at the top of their agenda, also bears accessibility and environmental factors in mind.
These factors include using knowledge of local roads and how they are used, in addition to asking for the views and opinions of local residents as to how their quality of life may be affected by increasing or decreasing the speed limits.
RTA compensation company, the Accident Advice Helpline, suggests that a more appropriate speed limit may help to reduce the number of accidents on local roads. A spokesperson from the non-fault accident claim company commented,
