When I teach I don't do so as a Buddhist nun, though I have been one for twenty-five years. I look at the persons in the group and always look toward, 'What will bring (each of) them to a cessation of suffering--that is, to more happiness?

She says, "I teach Christians, Jews, Hindus, Muslims, as well as Buddhists. Many are relatively new to meditation and to spirituality, some are somewhat experienced, and there are some very knowledgeable veteran mediators who come. All seem to gain something from what happens while we are together, even thought sometimes I wonder why and how." (she laughs).
"I will answer questions about Buddhism, particularly Theravada Buddhism, if they are asked, but I will not be running the retreat or any meetings from this exclusive framework. In part, this is because I believe that every path works for some, so who am I to teach that one is better than another? I offer what I know and have experienced in the hope that it is of use to others."
Maechee Brigitte Schrottenbacher is an 8 precept nun originally from Austria.
In April 1989 Brigitte went to her first meditation retreat in Thailand. During two months of intensive practice she gained some insight into the unsatisfactory, impermanent and non-self nature of the body and mind. This changed her life.
Now for nearly 25 years Maechee Brigitte has lived in Thailand and practiced intensive meditation with distinguished Bhikkhus. She is a meditation master and Dhamma teacher of Thais and international students.
She lives on almsfood and donations from Dhamma teachings, which sustain her as well as sixty other maechees. Since 2002 she has been touring Europe annually offering Dhamma teachings in many countries, and returning with offerings for Thai maechees and social service projects in Thailand.
Maechee Brigitte: gives necessary items to the poorest of the region; supports the Tamkrabok Drug Withdrawal Temple in Saraburi; helps support the “ AIDS Temple ” in Lopburi; and built houses for 4 families of Tsunami victims on Lhanta Island.
She is a 2009 recipient of the United Nations' "Outstanding Women in Buddhism" Award.
