Over the last two years Fresh Healthy Vending has been actively participating in the Communities Putting Prevention to Work program (CPPW). This initiative promotes programs for children and adults that help prevent disease such as obesity. Fresh Healthy Vending installs healthy vending machines in local schools, gyms, dance studios, YMCAs and locations where adults and children can be given healthier eating choices. The company now boasts a footprint of over two thousand machines.
Communities Putting Prevention to Work is a program funded by the Center for Disease Control. Fresh Healthy Vending, headquartered in California, fits the bill because they offer only healthy snack and drink alternatives in their vending machines. Fresh Healthy Vending machines offer soy yogurt, regular yogurt, fresh fruit juices, fruit snacks, low sugar cookies and granola bars and baked chips just to mention a few.
Sandy Anthony is a Fresh Healthy Vending Franchise owner in Pinellas Park, Florida who has two of her ten machines installed in the Tampa Florida Schools of Carrollwood Day School and Bayshore Christian School. Carol says that even though her healthy vending machines are placed next to regular vending machines many children are buying her products. This means that children are choosing healthier snack alternatives from vending, a trend that will surely make an impact on the obesity rate within her community over time.
“Kids are impulse buyers, often they choose what is in front of them without any thought, these machines allow them an alternative and the ability to make a better snacking choice,” says Anthony.
The CPPW Program in Pinellas Park has guidelines for beverages and snack in local schools. Fresh Healthy Vending products meet and exceed these guidelines and the company has designed specialized menus so the products are tasty and most importantly affordable. Sandy plans to install more vending machines in the local schools this year.
Sandy also has vending machines in Brucie Clay’s Dance Studio and On The Mat Martial Arts Studio, both environments that cater to kids and adults. She has seen the benefits for everyone since her machines have been installed. “These vending machines offer parents that sit waiting for children taking lessons better snack options also. It’s really caters to everyone.”
With over 63 percent of adults in Pinellas overweight, these vending machines come at the right time. Over 29.5 percent of children 2-4 years in Pinellas were found overweight. The vending machines are free to the schools and nonprofits and Fresh Healthy Vending also offers upfront financial grants as well as monthly sales commission to select locations.
Scott Burkett, Assistant Principal of Bayshore Christian School says, “The machines are great. Fresh and healthy snack alternatives are always welcome. Many students and adults are taking advantage of the unique beverage and snacks offered through the vending machines.”
Sandy Johnson, cofounder of On The Mat Martial Arts Studio says, “Our students love the Fresh Healthy vending machines. They love the variety of snacks and drinks available. It’s exciting to see both children and adults taking advantage of the alternatives. We were motivated to install the machines because the parents and students spend so much time here. With so many parents on the go, we knew that they would be a great source of healthy snacking.’’
