elsten software have announced the release of OneMusicAPI, an online music metadata API. OneMusicAPI is an aggregated API, meaning it accesses data exposed by multiple online sources. By aggregating and combining the data from multiple sources, application developers need only write one integration and benefit from automatic updates when the online sources change.

Dan Gravell, founder of elsten software, said "I learnt from developing our own music tagger, bliss, that, while there's a lot of useful music metadata available in free online sources, the cost of integration is high. It's not just the initial coding, but also the ongoing maintenance as APIs change. I wrote OneMusicAPI to isolate bliss from these changes, and avoid expensive updating of downloaded applications. Now I'm offering it to other application developers."

This initial release of OneMusicAPI offers cover art lookup. Application developers may send album/artist name pairs, CD TOCs, MusicBrainz Disc IDs or Acoustid fingerprints and OneMusicAPI will return cover art for the corresponding release. Cover art can be further constrained by image resolution. Future developments will see the offering of other metadata as well as cover art.

OneMusicAPI is a RESTful JSON API. Developers must request an API key and may test it for 1000 lookups. After that, access costs £15 per 100,000 lookups, or £150 per month. Interested developers should contact api(at)onemusicapi(dot)com for more information.
