On February 4, Yumi Media released a statement in response to the Pressconnects.com article about a British study that links a decrease in heart disease to vegetarianism and healthier eating habits, such as choosing meal substitutes provided by companies like Quorn.
According to the Pressconnects.com article “Study: Vegetarianism may cut heart disease risk by third,” by Robert Preidt, “[Dr. Francesca] Crowe’s team found that the vegetarians had a 32 percent lower chance of being hospitalized or dying from heart disease versus people who ate meat or fish.” Crowe is the lead researcher of the cancer epidemiology unit at the University of Oxford.
Since the 1990s, 45,000 people were recruited to the study from England and Scotland and approximately a third were vegetarians, allowing researchers to gauge a more accurate conclusion about participants’ eating habits and heart disease. Preidt wrote, “The vegetarians typically had lower blood pressures and cholesterol levels than non-vegetarians.”
