Gary’s Upholstery is celebrating 43 years of serving the upholstery needs of businesses and individuals seeking upholstery products and personalized advice and instruction.

From its humble beginnings, as a small brick and mortar upholstery business in 1970, Gary’s Upholstery has gone on to become a resource for businesses and individuals worldwide.

In February 2000, founder Gary Siliven launched his upholstery Web site, garysupholstery.com.

Siliven says he had concerns about taking his business online. “Early on, people were skeptical about doing business online, so we set up a toll free number so our customers could talk to a live person.” This also provided him the opportunity to do what he loves most – helping his customers choose the best fabrics and upholstery products and offering expert advice and tricks of the trade to ensure their upholstery projects are successful.

The Website also features an “Ask the Craftsman” link which allows customers to email their questions directly to Gary.

Siliven says customers call and email him with a variety of questions, including which material is best suited for their particular project, how to calculate the amount of material they need, and how to use their upholstering tools.

The Web site was so successful that in 2005, Siliven closed his brick and mortar business and turned all his attention to serving his customers online.

The recent economic downturn has created an even greater need for Gary’s products and services. Siliven says, “The recession created more self-employed upholsters as many of them lost their jobs working for other shops. When this happened they got online and found us for a supplier. It also created more do-it-yourself upholsterers as everyone was looking for ways to save money.”

Siliven says, “We offer free samples of our vinyl and fabric products as well as free sample matching. For example, if a customer has some existing leather upholstering material that they want to match, they can send a sample to us and we’ll research it and get back to them with the availability and pricing.”

Product availability is another key factor in Gary’s success over the years. The company offers a wide range of upholstery products, including foam for new and reupholstered furniture, fabric, marine upholstery, naugahyde and vinyl upholstering materials. “We drop ship to our customers worldwide from warehouses across the U.S. Siliven says this allows him to better serve his customers because, “It’s much less likely for us to be completely out of the product like a one warehouse business would be.”
