According to a survey done by Retail Advertising and Marketing Association, 53% of women would end their relationship if they didn't get something for Valentine's Day. Tip #1: Plan Ahead
Men should make dinner reservations, order flowers and buy cards at least one week in advance. "You absolutely don’t want to try running around picking up that heart-shaped box of chocolates from the convenience store and grabbing a bouquet of flowers from a street vendor." Take 15 minutes and use sites like FTD and Open Table to help in your search and planning.
Tip #2: Buy Multiple Cards
An easy, low-cost way to make a big impression is to buy 3-4 cards to give her throughout the day. Give the first one when she wakes up, have one arrive during the day, one at dinner and one at bedtime. Considering that 85% of Valentine's Day cards are purchased by women, men can stand out by being the exception to the rule.
Tip #3: Buy "Balanced" Gifts - One for Her, One for You
UndercoverWear highly recommends buying fun and sexy gifts for Valentine's Day. Lingerie, lotions and toys are perfect gifts on a day that celebrates love and romance.
James suggests, however, that men "balance" those gifts with another gift for her. "Something for you and something for her. If you are going with sexy lingerie as one gift, make sure you get her something comfy and cozy that she will like." She also suggests that jewelry, clothing, or a gift certificate to a local spa are perfect gifts to balance out the gift-giving.
Tip #4: Do Your Research
Men have 364 days of the year to decide what the right gifts, dinners, and cards should be. James suggests looking at their partner's likes, hobbies, and lifestyle to help decide on gifts. "If your partner is into fitness, eating healthy, and sports - don't buy a box of chocolates and a dinner out. Perhaps a basket of her favorite healthy treats and a gift certificate to go rock climbing will be a better gift for her." James also suggests looking at a partner's clothes to identify her styles, sizes and color choices. Doing that will increase your chances of getting something she will like.
