The doors are set to open on a gallery of expertise as art staff at Havering College of Further and Higher Education showcase their own creative talents.
The display will feature a range of original artwork including painting, drawings, printmaking, product design, ceramics, graphic design, video, photography and fashion.
Behind every up and coming artist and designer emerging from Havering College of Further and Higher Education (http://www.havering-college.ac.uk) lies a great teacher.
The Elective Affinities exhibition at the Brentwood Road Gallery, on the site of the Frances Bardsley Academy in Romford, Essex, is an opportunity to view the private art work of practising artists who also work in classrooms inspiring new talent.
Sixteen members of staff from the college’s £6 million Centre for Creative Arts are taking part in the show which will open on Monday, February 4th and run until Friday, March 8th.
Havering College of Further and Higher Education in Hornchurch, Essex, holds Artsmark Gold status from Arts Council England in recognition of its commitment to, and excellence in, arts education.
Curriculum manager for Fine Art Chris Stevens said: “The staff are practising professionals in their field. So when they’re not teaching, they are pursuing their passion, whether it be painting, printmaking, designing or photography. This first hand experience enables them to pass on the joy of being involved with something that is thought-provoking, stimulating and immensely rewarding.
“The purpose of this show is to raise the profile of our courses through highlighting the expertise and breadth of practice of staff at Havering College.”
London-based painter Chris has exhibited internationally. He is a past winner of the BP Portrait Award from the National Portrait Gallery and the 50over50 UK arts competition. He is showing an oil on canvas, The Age of Reason or Salem’s Lot.
Other staff exhibitors include:
Jesus Felipe Querol - an industrial designer, who originally trained in Spain and completed a MA in Industrial Design at Central St Martins, University of the Arts, London. He has exhibited at the Milan International Furniture Fair and at the Fashion in Motion Show. He will be displaying his latest work, a lighting project titled Geodesic Lightshades.
James O’Keefe – a printmaker whose work documents the ordinary architecture and people of the urban and suburban over a period of time and change.
David Meldrum - a successful illustrator and graphic designer, who will be exhibiting art from his Food Illustrator Project when he kept a visual diary of everything he ate and drank for a year.
Julia McAusland – a graduate of the Chelsea College of Art and Design, she will be showcasing from her range of handbags which utilise vintage fabrics.
Dr Jane Norris - an experienced freelance interior designer who holds an MA in Sculpture and recently completed her PhD.
Sue Withers - a specialist in printmaking, drawing and professional practice whose work has been exhibited by the Wellcome Trust. She will be exhibiting inkjet prints from her limited edition series Domestic Science.
Steve Page – a curriculum manager for FE Graphics who will be showcasing a collection of badges from the past few years.
Liam Biswell - an experienced Fine Art printmaker who completed an MA at Kingston University. His art explores concepts relating to journey and travel.
Neil Randerwala - a graphic designer, web designer, typographer, and photographer who works in many aspects of design, ranging from interactive media to paper based printmaking.
Other Creative Arts staff contributing to the exhibition are Jenny Bell, Tony Branch, David Burke, Michele Durante, Paul Hammond and Claire Willberg.
● Elective Affinities will be at the Brentwood Road Gallery at Frances Bardsley School, Brentwood Road, Romford RM1 2RR from February 4th – March 8th 2013. The exhibition will be closed the week commencing February 18th. Opening times are 9am-4pm (Wednesdays to Fridays) and by appointment only on Mondays and Tuesdays. A private view event will be held on Tuesday, February 12th from 6pm-8pm.
