On February 8, 2013, following an announcement by Philippine Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala concerning needed improvements to the agri-tourism industry, Colle Farmers Market responds.
An article in GMA News reports that at last month's World Economic Forum in Switzerland, President Benigno Aquino III advocated the development of organic farming as a boon for agri-tourism, noting that agriculture and tourism are key sectors that can potentially “spur growth and development outside Metro Manila.”
The Filipino government is reasonable in promoting agriculture and tourism as “strategic investment areas,” but why the specific emphasis on going organic? According to Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala, “investors who adopt organic technologies have lower production costs and more competitive products in the global market.”
Alcala adds that European importers are increasingly drawn to organic foods and products. “Developing organic farms can be a lucrative agri-tourism business and something investors should look into,” Alcala stated during the opening of the new Learning and Discovery Center in Quezon City.
The article reports that the Filipino Bureau of Agricultural Research (BAR) is now working on developing upland rice farms in Bicol, a project designed to “test the tolerance of indigenous rice varieties against drought.” The farms will be operated using organic farming methods, says the article.
Colle Farmers Market, an advocate for the organic farming community, is in favor of boosting local agri-tourism industries as a means to promote education about the advantages of organic farming. With the urgent need to increase the sustainability of current farming practices worldwide, comments Colle, pilot programs like the forthcoming rice farms in Bicol are important for setting an example to other communities.
It's an approach that will bring benefits beyond that of bolstering local and global economies, says Colle, adding that because food production is inextricably linked to consumption, the fact that organic production methods are increasingly viewed as a lucrative investment is a great sign for the future development of sustainable farming.
Although much of the attention being given to organic farming methods is currently motivated by profit, promoting agri-tourism creates a better-educated public and helps to spur on the global shift toward sustainability for sustainability's sake.
Colle is an E-Commerce enabled farmers market community that is passionate about sustainable consumption and responsible conservation. The Colle movement is dedicated to connecting natural product vendors, organic farmers and all people who are living an organic and natural lifestyle.
