New York, NY (PRWEB) February 12, 2013
One construction worker was killed and another was injured in two separate worksite accidents in Queens. According to a Jan. 24 NBC news article, one of the incidents occurred when a man working on the first floor of a four-story building in Astoria fell into a 15-foot hole. He was taken to a local hospital with severe head injuries and in cardiac arrest. The victim later died, the report said. Department of Buildings officials have issued a full stop-work order for the site pending further investigation. The other injury accident involved a man who was working at the NYPD's new police academy building in Queens, the Daily News reports. He fell 12 feet down an elevator shaft and suffered serious injuries.
According to the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), out of 4,114 worker fatalities in private industry in the year 2011, 721 or 17.5 percent were in construction. The leading causes of worker deaths on construction sites were falls followed by electrocution, struck by object and caught-in/between incidents. These four causes were responsible for nearly three out of five construction-related fatalities in 2011.
The tragedy of these incidents often lies in the fact that they could have been prevented, said New York personal injury lawyer Kenneth A. Wilhelm. "OSHA estimates that by ruling out the four main causes of construction accidents, the lives of 410 workers can be saved in the United States each year. It is disturbing that we have seen a number of fall-related injuries and deaths in New York City in recent months."
Employers have a duty to provide their workers with a safe environment, Wilhelm said. "This includes providing them with job training, safety training as well as the safety equipment they need to do their jobs. All construction workers should receive fall safety protection such as safety nets, restraints, toe boards and harnesses with ropes and guardrails. Fall safety should become a top priority for all construction companies and contractors that do business in New York City."
