Car accidents can occur anywhere at any time. During the winter time however, motorists are especially vulnerable to becoming stuck in their vehicles.

Between winter storms and chilly temperatures coupled with a flu season like no other, it is no secret that the winter has arrived in Illinois. While residents have enjoyed a warm spell, winter is not over yet. Soon, they will be bundling up and be cranking up the thermostats inside their homes again. Just this past weekend alone in Illinois, authorities handled over a dozen accidents due to icy roads.

Snow storms can bring decreased visibility, ice and snow drifts that make driving increasingly dangerous. Drifting snow and icy conditions can result in cars beginning to spin out of control and collide with one another, causing massive accidents. In the case of this weekend’s accidents, there were vehicles rear-ending one another, sliding into light poles and sliding off the highway completely and into underpasses. Although no one was seriously hurt, things could have been worse. And for those not involved, these accidents could have resulted in massive delays during very frigid weather.

Car accidents can occur anywhere at any time. During the winter time however, motorists are especially vulnerable to becoming stuck in their vehicles. The insurance agents at Stassen Insurance want residents to be prepared for anything.

It is recommended that motorists keep the following in an emergency kit inside of their car during the winter:

  •     A first aid kit
  •     Emergency flares in case of car trouble or an accident
  •     Blankets and warm clothes – if a driver become stranded without heat, this will be necessary to stay warm
  •     A small shovel and an ice scraper to clear snow off of and from around the car
  •     A flashlight
  •     Bottled water and snacks
  •     Jumper cables

If a motorist finds himself in a situation where he or she cannot operate the vehicle due to weather or an accident, the first thing to do is call 9-1-1. Emergency responders can attempt to rescue the driver. However, some weather conditions make it impossible to do so immediately, and some accidents make it difficult to do so at all. Stassen Insurance offers comprehensive auto insurance that is customizable to motorist’s needs and emergency roadside assistance can be built into policies.

Residents with questions or concerns about their auto insurance policy or staying safe on the road are encouraged to call Stassen Insurance today.
