Elements Behavioral Health invites clinicians and treatment professionals to a workshop titled “Stimulant and Sexual Addictions: Assessing and Working with the Dually Addicted Client” on Feb. 28, 2013, from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., at the Lod Cook Alumni Center at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.
Some people who abuse stimulant drugs, such as cocaine and crystal meth, and “party drugs,” such as GHB, MDMA and ketamine, pair their drug use with sexual acting out (for example, anonymous sex or compulsive pornography use). The goal of this presentation is to offer clinicians an understanding of the interaction between stimulant drug abuse and sexual behavior and to provide them with the assessment tools and treatment resources to help clients with this type of dual addiction.
“When an individual is abusing stimulants and engaging in sexual behavior, treatment typically focuses on the drug abuse – the underlying assumption being that once sober, the sexual behavior will stop,” said Mr. Weiss. “But unless treatment addresses both problems comprehensively and simultaneously, the relapse risk is exceptionally high as the desire to return to past sexually intense experiences inevitably leads back to active drug abuse.”
At the workshop, Mr. Weiss will discuss the type of intensive, non-shaming treatment that is most effective for people struggling with both stimulant drug abuse and sexual acting out, with an emphasis on aftercare, relapse prevention, and healthy, sober intimacy and sexuality. Treatment must also address the impact past sexual behavior may have had on partners, spouses and families as well as the topic of “sober sex,” which is often a mystery to people with a long history of stimulant abuse.
Workshop attendees will earn two CEUs. To register or learn more about Mr. Weiss’ other speaking engagements, visit the Elements Behavioral Health events page or contact Jeanette Lisalda at (866) 825-1104 or jlisalda (at) theelements (dot) com.
