Compassion Tea Company has joined the farmer’s market movement and has set up a booth at the Calabasas Farmer’s Market in the Los Angeles area. Every Saturday since December, 2012, directors Jack and Chris Faherty and Ed and Wendy Bjurstrom offer tea samplings, information about the ways in which Compassion Tea Company and CompassioNow integrate their efforts to provide health care to “the world’s least served,” and sell tea, accessories, and memberships.
What began as a fact-finding endeavor has become an intriguing new way to reach people with the tea and mission of Compassion Tea. “People like to sample our teas! When they discover how tasty the teas are and the reason behind why we sell tea, people are excited to join our efforts. We already have a few regulars!” shared Mrs. Bjurstom. “We are considering expanding to other farmer’s markets in the area and are looking at possible ways to do so,” explained Mr. Faherty.
Compassion Tea Company opened its online store in 2011 after a group of friends determined to find a better way to provide sustainable funding for CompassioNow, a non-profit organization that sends life-saving medical supplies, pharmaceuticals, and funding for staff and projects to medical clinics in South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, and Kenya. In July 2012, two Compassion Tea directors carried 250 lbs. of medical supplies to South Africa where they were distributed to the Lily of the Valley Medical Clinic and the 1000 Hills Community Helpers clinic. Supplies were either donated to or purchased by CompassioNow. A similar trip, this time to Tanzania Christian Clinic and Karero Clinic in Kenya, is being planned for this summer.
