On February 12, Online Bed Quilt, a leading mattress sale company, responds to an article published by Science Daily with regard to a new study finding that obstructive sleep apnea is an indication of cardiac dysfunction.

According to the article published by Science Daily, a recent study conducted by the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine found that “women with obstructive sleep apnea and cardiac symptoms have a 31 percent incidence of cardiac dysfunction.”

The study analyzed 1,265 women between the ages of 15- 45, the article said. These women were chosen based upon their Apnea-Hypopnea Index criteria after going through nocturnal Polysomnogram testing.

In the article, Laura K.P. Vricella, MD, a fellow of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the MetroHealth Medical Center, said, “As obesity rates increase among reproductive age women, the frequency of obstructive sleep apnea and cardiovascular disease in pregnancy is anticipated to rise. The increased hemodynamic demands of pregnancy can cause women with underlying cardiac disease to decompensate.”

The article said obstructive sleep apnea causes some people to stop breathing during sleep. The pauses can be short or long, from 10 seconds to a few minutes, and can even occur up to 30 times an hour. The article said such pauses could lead to cardiovascular disease.

Justin Maas, a representative from mattress sale company Online Bed Quilt, said sleep apnea is a terrible condition that really disturbs sleep and could be fatal. “Sleep apnea is a very serious disorder and could be fatal,” he said. “Pregnant women with sleep apnea could actually harm their unborn children because of the severe pauses in breathing during the night. Their treatment is imperative in order for the baby to be delivered healthy.”

Maas also said that while serious treatment and management can help with obstructive sleep apnea, pregnant women should also look into updating their sleep products.
“When you’re pregnant, there’s an immense amount of pressure on your body,” he said. “Sometimes your old bedding doesn’t cut it and you feel uncomfortable. It’s important to upgrade your products and even your mattress to ensure you get a good night’s sleep and your pressure points are being alleviated. This may also help reduce the affects of obstructive sleep apnea and assist in opening airways.”

The article revealed that the findings of the study would be presented at the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine’s annual Pregnancy Meeting in San Francisco on Feb. 15.
