The extent of uptime issues and the massive cost of downtime is well understood. Often overlooked is the issue of broken links - these drive away users, cost companies money, and damage their search engine rankings. To prove the value of their newly-released website monitoring service (CloudTrawl), Deep Cognition Ltd. scanned many Fortune 500 websites, checking for broken links. They found that 92% of Fortune 500 sites had broken links. 43% had more than 100 of the errors and worryingly 13% of all pages in the Fortune 500’s sites contain at least one broken link. These included links to internal and external news, quarterly statements and social media presences. Perhaps most worrying were the broken links to legal notices and terms & conditions documents.
In his 2012 TED talk, well-known digital marketing strategist Renny Gleeson said “What a 404 page tells you is that you fell through the cracks [...] a 404 page is the feeling of a broken relationship”. The statistics were generated by CloudTrawl simultaneously checking the links in 100 random Fortune 500 websites - they prove that 404’s and other types of broken links are not only recognised as very problematic, they’re extremely widespread even among the world's most influential companies.
Considering the damage they do to consumer confidence and the frequency with which they occur, broken links are a problem which must be taken seriously by all website owners. Deep Cognition’s tools give webmasters the ability to find and get alerted to these and other errors quickly:
