On February 19, Linus Bike, cyclist safety advocates and commuter bike distributor, is announcing their support for an ordinance in Minneapolis that requires facilities for commuter cyclists.
According to a recent article in The Line, City Council member Gary Schiff stated that Minneapolis' Bicycle Advisory Committee recommended that city officials broaden an ordinance requiring “large downtown developments to provide certain amenities for bicyclists.”
Under the 2001 ordinance, The Line reports, “new projects of 500,000 square feet or more need to have a number of bicycle parking stalls, showers, and lockers.” But members of the Bicycle Advisory Committee feel the ordinance is inadequate, according to the article, saying that one of the ordinance's major shortcomings is that buildings with the same height and scale that are outside of the business district are not included in the mandate.
“The number-one deterrent, when people are asked, is a lack of facilities at work to shower and change,” Schiff says. Schiff cites Coloplast, a medical device company headquartered in North Minneapolis, as a local example. Coloplast employees “still don’t find [an available bicycle path] convenient without an available facility to use,” says Schiff. Since the building lies outside the business district, it isn't required to offer amenities for cyclists.
The article reports that the Bicycle Advisory Committee “would like to have big buildings across the city adhere to the same guidelines as downtown developments.” The proposal will be put to all the City Council members at the Council's next meeting in early February.
Linus Bike representative China Reevers comments, saying that should the broadened ordinance be approved, it will be a victory for commuters and businesses alike.
“Businesses can benefit dramatically from having a staff of bicycle commuters. Insurance costs will decrease, tax breaks will be more readily available and employees will be happier overall. We here at Linus Bike propose that all businesses try to incorporate the proper facilities for bicycle commuters and encourage a healthier lifestyle for their employees.”
