A recent article in The Washington Post reports that the U.S. Postal Service is losing $25 million each day, which has prompted a proposal by Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe to cut back the service's Saturday deliveries to only parcels. Now, several Facebook pages are springing up to help save the Post Office. Events such as “we love snail mail,” along with other pages and thousands of Twitter posts have been created to help keep letter delivery running on Saturdays.
“There’s a delicious irony in the thought that social media might help rescue the financially ailing U.S. Postal Service when e-mail and online bill payment get blamed for the drops in mail volume and revenue,” the article said. In 2012, 160 billion pieces of mail were delivered. This may seem like a lot, but compared to 202 billion in 2003, it’s obvious that the Postal Service is in decline. However, online shopping has increased the number of packages being delivered.
Many government officials are concerned about the proposal to stop Saturday deliveries, especially those in rural areas such as Wyoming and Alaska, where people may not have any other access to mail. The Post Office is also the second-largest employer in the United States, and some are believe the proposal will have a negative effect on the job market and middle class.
