On February 20, the online marketing company fishbat issues a response to recent reports about the rising number of seniors using Facebook and other social media.
According to a Yahoo! News article, the 105-year-old Edythe Kirchmaier has several records under her belt due to her age. On top of being the oldest living former student of the University of Chicago and the oldest licensed driver in the state of California, she is now the oldest living registered Facebook user.
Kirchmaier’s Facebook account was set up last month by the medical aid charity Direct Relief, in honor of her birthday, reports the article. Kirchmaier said that she has already been contacted by many people that are interested in learning about her, and she also uses the social media site to keep in touch with friends and family.
She has over 20,000 friends already, and has been using her account to promote the Direct Relief Facebook page, which currently has 77,000 likes. Kirchmaier hopes to help the page reach 105,000 as a symbol of her age.
The article points out that Facebook is a drastically different form of communication than the telegraphs and rotary telephones that Kirchmaier was born into, but Kirchmaier is hardly the only senior using Facebook: “Retirees age 65 and older are the fastest-growing group of social networkers on sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn and MySpace, according to a 2012 survey by the Pew Research Center's Internet and American Life Project.” The report stated that about 40 percent of Internet users that are 65 or older are on Facebook.
Clay Darrohn, the CEO of fishbat, Inc., responds to the surprising figures of senior citizens on Facebook, saying that it's great to see more than just youngsters benefiting from the social opportunities of the digital era. “What’s great about seniors using Facebook and other social media sites is that they can re-connect with people that haven’t talked to in years, maybe even decades,” says Darrohn.
Darrohn continues, saying that the increasing number of older people using social media opens new doors for fishbat and the rest of the online marketing community. “A brand new demographic is flocking to social media sites, and now we can reach out an audience that is virtually untouched,” he says.
