New York City (PRWEB) February 20, 2013
A Board-certified physician, hospital executive and licensed attorney has created the only comprehensive online educational resource about malpractice and reducing liability risk.
Victor Waters, M.D., J.D. created Law-4-Docs.com, which offers videos, an e-book, articles and newsletters that will help physicians and other health care professionals understand the malpractice process and learn how to protect themselves against lawsuits.
Studies show that 90 percent of physicians will be sued at some point in their careers. A recent study by Harvard Medical School and the RAND Corporation indicates that physicians spend more than 10 percent of their careers fighting insurance malpractice claims, the bulk of which are later dismissed or dropped.
The emotional toll of malpractice lawsuits on physicians is also a concern to Dr. Waters, who believes that education about the process would help reduce stress that causes symptoms similar to post-traumatic stress disorder.
Dr. Waters said that he created Law-4-Docs because he was alarmed that physicians, residents and other health care professionals, including physician assistants and nurse practitioners, haven’t had access to any formal program that educates them about reducing liability or dealing with the litigation process if sued.
“As the regulatory environment for healthcare continues to change, so will concurrent risk for practitioners," said Dr. Waters. “In over two decades of practicing medicine, I have seen physicians and health care practitioners too easily fall victim to malpractice liability and many have been forced to pay the ultimate price – losing their medical careers and suffering from stress-related emotional issues.”
Other physicians say that Law-4-Docs will be an important resource for medical professionals.
“The new Law-4-Docs malpractice prevention site will be a pivotal resource for physicians who need strategies for avoidance of medical malpractice lawsuits, as well as insights on how to manage the litigation process should one occur," said Bernard F. Godley, M.D., Ph.D., FACS, M.B.A, professor and chairman, Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Texas Medical Branch.
Health care providers can join Law-4-Docs.com as members on a subscription basis or access individual informational tools by "pay-per-use." Group rates are available for health care organizations.
Members can access resources on liability risk and the malpractice lawsuit process, including comprehensive information on defensive medicine, the steps to take if sued, whether or not to settle a case, deposition and trial tips, secrets attorneys do not want doctors to know, lawsuit consequences and how offensive medicine is better protection against litigation.
