Recent Low Freight Rates: Result of Shippers, Freight Brokers, Carriers or Economy?

Forum posts related to low rates are the top viewed and commented forums on the website.

One forum topic, dolefully labeled ‘What Happened’, has had a number of replies in regards to why freight rates may seem low in the winter season. One member states the average freight rate right now is $1.60 per running mile and another declares that brokers are undercutting each other while letting the carrier “eat” the cost. To the defense of the brokers another user mentions there’s “no loyalty from a lot of shippers anymore”, and taking the lowest bid on the freight loads makes the most sense for their business.

Flinn explains, "It’s typically slower this time of year and with the drought we faced last year and high feed costs, there’s not a lot of bulk freight moving like years before. Several carrier users commented on how to solve this issue. One suggests to not take loads under a particular dollar per mile rate such as $1.60. Others argue that even under $2/mile is too low. Some argue to negotiate rates and don’t accept the initial offer. They recommend reminding shippers and brokers of the costs associated in transporting the load. Others mention to not haul, period, and wait for demand to pick up. While no proposed solution has the majority of the discussion, it's encouraging to see the community of carriers helping each other.

Broker members are also contributing to the conversation, with many saying they look out for the carrier and try to keep a certain dollar per mile rate on any load they take.
