On February 22, California-based city bike manufacturer Linus Bike offers a response to a new study that finds Americans spend an average of 38 hours in traffic every year.
According to The Atlantic, Washington, D.C. is America's most congested city, with its commuters spending an average of 67 hours in traffic per year, more than the average work-week. Rounding out the top five cities were Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, and Boston. Time is not the only thing being spent. “The cost of all of this wasted time (38 hours per commuter each year) and fuel comes out to $121 billion annually. That brings the cost for the average commuter to $818.”
The article goes on to say that only 1.7 percent of city commuters use a form of transportation other than cars, public transportation, or walking. That small percentage includes biking, which is becoming more popular in metro areas that are now accommodating people who opt for a city bike by creating bike lanes.
China Reevers, a representative of Linus Bike, responds to the study. Reevers emphasizes the positive aspects of commuting by bike in the city, saying, “By choosing a city bike as a means of transportation, a commuter can reap any number of benefits. Saving money on gas, tolls, and cab fares are just a few of the possible perks one can benefit from by biking. Additionally, a cyclist would be getting exercise that one may not have time for during the day’s busy schedule. I’m sure there are plenty who would trade sitting in traffic for all those hours for something more engaging. Your commute might even be shorter!”
