Speaking at one of FDU's alumni chapter networking meetings, Andy O’Connor, President of A.J. O'Connor Associates (AJO) set the stage by outlining AJO’s leadership development and career transition work with stories and examples of the key areas of development in which AJO supports its client organizations today. Andy also shared his personal career journey from law enforcement to human resource consulting when he took the helm of, and expanded the capabilities of the career transition business started by his father thirty years ago.

What are the top six things you can do to proactively manage your career?

• Understand the difference between emotional intelligence (EI) and intelligence quotient (IQ). Unlike IQ which is a threshold capability, most successful leaders possess high emotional intelligence. Read and learn from Daniel Goleman’s work on EI.
• Develop the components of EI at work and demonstrate EI skills during an employment or promotional interview. Employers are actively looking for this competence when making hiring decisions today.
• Stay abreast of technological, social and global trends that are changing the workplace and develop new knowledge and skills to keep pace.
• Consider lateral moves and/or volunteer for special assignments if you are currently employed. If you are unemployed, don’t overlook contract assignments. Many permanent jobs start out as temporary positions today.
• Develop your Leader 2020 competencies, such as global mindset, learning agility and digital proficiency. Seek feedback, mentoring and coaching opportunities to help you grow your capabilities.
• Develop a strong and proactive network, offline and online, including networking within your organization if you are currently employed.
