The BBC Symphony Orchestra’s final Total Immersion day of the 2012-13 season focuses on music of living composers from Denmark and Finland, in Total Immersion: New from the North. On Saturday 9 March, acclaimed Finnish conductor John Storgårds will conduct a programme of four UK premieres, preceded in the day by concerts by the BBC Singers and the Vertavo Quartet, as well as two films celebrating the music of Danish master Per Nørgård in his 80th birthday year.

The day will culminate in the UK premiere of Per Nørgård’s Symphony No. 8, alongside UK premieres of Faroese composer Sunleif Rasmussen’s Prelude for Brass, Finn Magnus Lindberg’s Era and compatriot Sebastian Fagerlund’s Clarinet Concerto with soloist Christoffer Sundqvist, performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra under John Storgårds.

In the lunchtime concert, the Vertavo Quartet perform the world premiere of Danish composer Poul Ruders’s String Quartet No.4, completing a programme of music by Finnish composers Jouni Kaipainen and Kaija Saariaho, and the London premiere of Dane Hans Abrahamsen’s third string quartet ‘Motet’.

Prior to the main evening concert, James Morgan will conduct the BBC Singers in St Giles Cripplegate in contemporary highlights by Per Nørgård, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Einojuhani Rautavaara, Bo Holten, Jussi Chydenius and Olli Kortekangas.

The Total Immersion day will also explore the life of legendary Danish composer Per Nørgård with two film screenings; Hedda Gabler, Ibsen’s play brought to life by his music and starring Irish actress Fiona Shaw, and Timeless Harvest, Martin Verdet's film of Per Nørgård working with cellists Valter Despalj and Ralph Kirschbaum and the Kroger Quartet on the Danish island of Lolland.

Total Immersion days feature talks, films and discussion as well a range of performances – from small scale chamber works to full blown orchestral concerts - designed to give an insight into the new musical writing from the countries and composers explored.
