On February 25, one of the leading mattress stores in New York, Online Bed Quilt, comments on an article published by Health News Today, which details a study finding people could sleep better by eating a variety of foods.
According to Medical News Today, a study conducted by the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine found that people who eat a large variety of food also tend to have healthier sleep patterns. Researchers at the university analyzed data from a 2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.
Medical News Today reports that researchers grouped subjects by sleep pattern. The groups that made up the study consisted of four categories: very short sleep, short sleep, normal sleep and long sleep. While organized in these groups, Medical News Today reported the researchers looked at the types of food they consumed before sleeping.
The findings, according to Medical News Today, showed that people who reported sleeping the normal 7-8 hours per night had a more varied diet. The article said people who had shorter sleep times hardly had any variation in diet. Short sleepers also consumed the most amounts of calories but lacked vitamin C and selenium and drank less tap water.
Lead author of the sleep study Michael A. Grandner said the relationship between healthy eating and sleep could be better explored. Grandner explains if scientists could figure out which foods or nutrients help people sleep better, than there might be a decrease in obesity and heart problems.
“If we can pinpoint the ideal mix of nutrients and calories to promote healthy sleep, the healthcare community has the potential to make a major dent in obesity and other cardiometabolic risk factors,” Grandner told Medical News Today.

While eating healthy is one way to get a better night’s sleep, Maas also suggested looking into the quality of your mattress. “You spend half of your life sleeping and mattresses are essential,” he said. “If you’re not sleeping on the right mattress, you could be jeopardizing your body’s ability to rest.”
