Chalksmart.com officially launched this month as the “go-to” website for expatriate families moving to China and looking for an international school in Shanghai, Beijing and other major cities. The site offers a rich search experience with listings for all international schools as well as private schools catering towards international students. The website can be accessed here: http://www.chalksmart.com.
Chalksmart’s innovative website helps expat families find the right school for their family without the heavy task of searching through hundreds of websites. Chalksmart.com has detailed information on international schools – starting in Shanghai – including each school’s background information, curriculum type, average class size, school fees and other factors that parents use to choose a school.
"This website is truly the first of its kind with a unique search engine that lets you choose what is important in your child’s education and then browse the customized results," states Mike Golden, co-founder of Chalksmart. "As a parent it was frustrating to find that the only resources available were print magazines, or simple website listings that did not answer any of the many questions that families have about a new city’s schooling and environment. There seemed to be a huge market gap."
In addition to international school information, Chalksmart also helps families assimilate into China with valuable information about health insurance, home help, family restaurants and community activities. A rich mapping engine, launching in March, will include real estate information. For example, users will be able to see what housing complexes are nearby a specific school, or which schools are nearby a specific house.
Interviews with parents and school administrators helped Chalksmart’s team understand the key factors that parents use in their decision-making process, as well as the key criteria that schools hope parents can understand about their schools. Curriculum types – such as American, British, and other European are one factor, along with specific programs and certifications, such as the IB Diploma Programme, IGCSE, and AP courses. Besides quantitative data for each school, the company also focuses on four key questions for each organization to give schools the opportunity to differentiate themselves:
Golden also announced plans to expand into Beijing, Guangzhou and Hong Kong this year, followed by other Asian countries in 2014. “The back-end engine supports rapid expansion into new cities, so we will be able to help families all over the world moving to Asia in the near future,” he explained.
Chalksmart is an education-focused company with its main offices in Shanghai. Chalksmart aims to help families make the right decisions for their children through objective, in-depth knowledge of international schools and the communities around them.
