“Women Inspiring Innovation through Imagination” is the 2013 theme for National Women’s History Month. Author Linda Hubalek states her Swedish immigrant ancestor Christina Charlotta Johnson portrayed this type of woman when making a home in Kansas during the 1860s.
“When I think of this year’s Women’s History Month’s theme, I think of how the pioneer women had to be very innovative and creative to make a life on the prairie with hardly anything, but what nature would provide,” said Linda K. Hubalek.
While writing Cultivating Hope, Hubalek imagined how her women ancestors coped with building a new homestead in the middle of a treeless glassland. Years of hard work to develop the land improves the quality of their life—but sometimes not without a price.
“Think of sweating to plow the sod, plant the seed, cultivate the crop—only to lose it all by a hailstorm right before you harvested it. Then what did they do? They had to figure out how to survive until the next crop, and they did,” said Linda K. Hubalek.
“Women’s History Month recognizes the women’s role in America’s history,” said Hubalek. “My books show how innovating the pioneer women were to survive, and thrive, with very limited or crude supplies on hand.”
