On February 28, Yumi Media, a food website devoted food news, recipes, and products supporting a healthy lifestyle, issues a response to Simsbury High School Vegetarian Club’s National Meatout Day celebration and encourages healthy living – singling out products like Quorn that aim to make the transition into vegetarianism easy for diehard meat-eaters.
According to The Simsbury News, the Simsbury High School Vegetarian Club is planning to celebrate “National Meatout Day” March 20, 2013 “in an effort to raise awareness about animal rights and healthy eating options.”
On National Meatout Day, reports Simsbury News, the school will offer students a vegan option for lunch, and those students who choose it will be entered into a raffle contest to win a gift card. “The Board of Education has been very supportive and so has the director of menus,” said club advisor Ashley Reklaitis.
According to The Simsbury News, part of the Simsbury High School Vegetarian Club’s goal is to raise awareness about animal rights and the problems of animal abuse within the food production industries. “We feel a sense of helping animals and promoting a healthy dietary choice,” said club founder Heather Schiller. After raising money during a bake sale last year, the school's Vegetarian Club recently adopted a rescue duck, named Seltzer. Seltzer “now lives on a farm sanctuary in upstate New York as part of the Adopt-A-Farm Animal Project,” reports The Simsbury News.
“It is a wonderful thing seeing high school kids promoting vegetarianism and animal rights,” comments Yumi Media Representative Justin Maas. “The benefits of vegetarianism are many, which is why vegetarian advocacy needs to come from all sectors. When you hear about Quorn complaints or other attacks against vegetarian products, or people downplaying the problems of animal abuse, it is the actions of these kids that prove that no vegetarian is alone.”
Maas adds that he will be snacking on some of his favorite dishes in honor of National Meatout Day. “National Meatout Day is officially on our calendars this year and we look forward to celebrating along with the students of Simsbury High.”
