On February 28, 2013 Brian Turner, representative of pre-workout supplement supplier Muscular Development Store, responded to a recent study on the fat-burning effects of working out before breakfast.
According to National Post, working out before eating in the morning can help you burn 20 percent more body fat. Researchers from University of Northumbria had 12 males run on a treadmill at moderate intensity at 10:00 a.m. Some of the men in the group ate breakfast before the workout, while the others had not eaten since the previous night. “Researchers found that fasting exercisers had a smaller appetite later in the day, and did not consume more calories to compensate for early-morning hunger, compared to their peers who had eaten before their workout,” National Post reports. Furthermore, those who did not eat before the workout burned 20 percent more fat during their run.
Brian Turner, representative for the Muscular Development Store, responded to the study as vital to fat loss. “The results of this study are very interesting, and I think people that are trying to burn fat can take a lot from it,” he said. “However, it is still important to get some sort of food or supplement in your body, pre-workout. This will maximize your energy and ensure that you are putting 100 percent into all of your workouts.”
Turner added that people who try to burn more fat this way— especially those that lift weights— should take it a little easier at first. “Make sure your body can handle a workout without the added energy you get from food. This could potentially lead to injury, which is never a good thing.”
