fishbat Inc., One of Long Island’s Best Social Media Agencies, Comments on New Twitter Character Limit

Following Twitter’s reduction of character limits for tweets with links, fishbat’s VP of Social Media says the change is minor, but could prove to be a nuisance to marketers.

On March 4, fishbat, Inc.’s vice president of social media, Sida Li, reacted to a new change in Twitter’s character limit discussed on the newest episode of “fishbat Splash.”

The segment detailed Twitter’s decision to shorten tweets that share condensed links. In the video, Gabrielle Giuffrida, Community Manager of fishbat, Inc. and “fishbat Splash” correspondent, said the reduction was announced back in December in order to urge developers and users to prepare. The change finally took effect on Feb. 20.

Previously, links pasted into tweets only took up 20 characters, leaving the remaining 120 for supplementary text and tags. Now, Twitter’s new “t.co URL wrapping” code uses more characters in order to provide improved link support and prevent bad links with viruses.

Due to the upgrade in Twitter’s t.co URL wrapping code, links now take up 22 characters, leaving the remaining 118 characters for commentary and tagging. Secure links, labeled “https,” now take up 23 characters, leaving only 117 characters to work with.

According to fishbat’s VP of Social Media, Sida Li, the two-character difference is a small change, but has the potential to cause a bit of hassle when posting tweets. He said individual users might not even notice, but “marketers looking to virally promote and tag their tweets might find it a little harder” to do so.

For example, if a marketer wants to post a video link promoting its brand, it might not be able to fit the video's title in the tweet alongside the tags. Li said this could cause a bit of annoyance among advertisers or social media agencies.

Though the limit poses a small hurdle for marketers, Li and Giuffrida agreed it could inspire creativity when promoting links in tweets.
