Bohemia, NY (PRWEB) March 06, 2013

On March 6, Online Bed Quilt, a leading mattress-review company, responds to an article published on Capitol Weekly with regard to a new bill designed to promote mattress recycling in California.

According to Capitol Weekly, bill SB 245 was introduced by Sen. Lou Correa, D- Santa Ana, in an attempt to manage waste more effectively and reduce the state’s carbon footprint.

Correa wrote, “SB 245 will strike a balance that incentivizes Californians to recycle used mattresses, thus easing the burden on our landfills and communities. [This burden will remove our carbon footprint] while retaining valuable employers, creating new jobs and business opportunities.”

Correa said in the Capitol Weekly the bill would create a nonprofit organization with the purpose of creating a safer used mattress-recycling program. The program’s mission will be to implement and manage a statewide collection system for discarded mattresses.

Mattresses will be taken apart and the components will be used to make other products, Capitol Weekly reports.

Justin Maas, a representative from mattress review company Online Bed Quilt, said California is one of the frontrunners when it comes to sustainability and eco-friendly programs adding the bill could be a great example for other states.

“I think more states need to implement this kind of a recycling program,” Maas said. “Landfills are constantly growing and I can’t even imagine the amount of mattresses buried among the trash that could have been reused for other items. It seems like a no-brainer. Recycle mattresses and help the environment.”

The organization would be funded through the collection of fees from the sale of new mattresses or box springs, Capitol Weekly reports. The funds raised would be used to discourage illegal mattress dumping by offering a financial reward to consumers, businesses and groups that pick up mattresses on the side of the road.

“Giving people a reward for turning in illegally dumped mattresses is definitely a great idea,” Maas said. “A program like this is needed to stop people from dumping them illegally.”
