Parking lots can be dangerous, especially during tailgating events where you have a lot of pedestrians and moving vehicles
New Haven, CT (PRWEB) March 09, 2013
The Hartford and New Haven personal injury lawyers at the Law Offices of Mark E. Salomone & Morelli said today that an accident involving the death of one person and injuries to two others during parking lot tailgating at a Yale-Harvard football game illustrates the hazards of negotiating parking lots.
A Yale University student was given probation after being charged with running over a woman at a parking lot tailgating party last year, according to an Associated Press story on February 1 in The Republican, of Springfield, Mass.
According to the story, Brendan Ross, of O'Fallon, Mo., drove a rented U-Haul truck through a crowded parking lot. He was transporting kegs of beer to the event when he struck three women, killing one of them. The story explains that Ross pleaded guilty to traveling too fast and unsafe starting. He said he had hit the gas pedal accidentally, thinking it was the brake, according to the news report. The AP also reports that Ross was granted accelerated rehabilitation in New Haven Superior Court and that his charges will be dismissed if he successfully completes probation.
New Haven auto accident lawyers at the Law Offices of Salomone & Morelli said unsafe driving behavior can lead to serious injuries and fatalities in Connecticut.
“Parking lots can be dangerous, especially during tailgating events where you have a lot of pedestrians and moving vehicles,” said New Haven personal injury lawyer Joe Morelli. “I encourage everyone in parking lots – whether you’re driving to a game at a stadium or you’re going to a shopping mall – to proceed cautiously.”
“The failure to use reasonable care to avoid foreseeable harm to a person or property is negligence,” explained Morelli, who has been a Hartford personal injury attorney for over 30 years. “Occasionally, a person can be found to be negligent according to the law without meaning to cause harm. And as in many Connecticut motor vehicle injury accidents, this one involved more than one injured party. In this New Haven case, the reckless driver is being sued by one of the other two women he hit in the accident.”
The AP article stated that Ross had originally been charged with negligent homicide with a motor vehicle as well as reckless driving, but prosecutors agreed to change the charges to reckless endangerment and reckless driving so that he could be eligible for the special first offenders’ program.
