A fire that started on 25th February 2013 in a data center owned by Chief Telecom Inc. affected nearly 80% of Internet services nationwide, in what has been the worst disruption to Taiwan's Internet since the 921 earthquake in 1999. This led to a disruption of services from Google, Yahoo, and major Telco operators, as well as 1 of 4 services from Nexusguard's scrubbing centers, which were taken offline for more than 24 hours. Nexusguard’s Business Continuity Planning (BCP), an Anycast Backbone, and its Global Scrubbing Centers ensured that business continued uninterrupted for Nexusguard customers.
Besides being a realistic test of BCP, this incident has highlighted 3 key factors mandatory to the building of a resilient infrastructure:
1. Avoidance of potential single point failures via a multi-sited, globally distributed infrastructure.
2. Soundly tested and regularly practiced Business Continuity Plans.
3. Diligent and concerted effort by staff members during a crisis.
Most DDoS mitigation providers in the market today operate with only one scrubbing center and, if similar events were to take place at their centers’ locations, the impact would be potentially disastrous. Even with multiple data centers and disaster recovery sites, a vast majority of providers would be unable to deliver services to their customers without proper data synchronization and regularly tested BCP mechanisms.
As an integral component of any sound BCP, the set up and management of a Disaster Recovery (DR) site is a costly and demanding task for any business. The initial challenge lies in the substantial capital outlay required to setup the backup site, as well as the operational expenses required to maintain it. The main challenge comes from the actual determination that- in the unlikely event of an emergency- the disaster site will function as intended and operations can be migrated over smoothly.
