With summer fast approaching, men and women everywhere are preparing to spend more time baring their skin in the sun. The common practice of waxing has, for many, been a grooming practice before hitting the beach or pool; but many waxing clients have not been aware of the preventative health measures their personal grooming allows, or the harm it does to their skin.

Bloomberg.com’s article shared recent statistics on how the decade old trend of Brazilian waxing has lead to a global decrease in the pubic lice population, but has also created conflicting side effects for the client with reports of bacterial infections in the skin’s pores.

Fernando Perez a representative of Probiotic Action, "the best treatment for acne" explains how the grooming technique may be damaging your skin, “Waxing has proved to be an excellent method of hair removal, but it is often harsh on the pores and first layers of skin. When epilation happens the pore is left empty, at this point bacteria and dirt have the opportunity to invade the space and cause infection. Additionally, cracks in the skin from hot wax, used waxed, or irritated skin create a breeding ground for bad bacteria.”

Dr. Cooper Robbins of the University of Sydney states in the article that waxing causes the “-breaching its protective barrier and potentially aiding the spread of other sexually transmitted infections.” Ingrown hairs are also a presented risk causing the skin to swell up and rupture pores, letting in additional dirt and bacteria under the skins surface.

Perez suggests for those that experience irritation from the grooming practice, to use a gentle non-comedogenic cleanser to treat a just waxed area. Staying away from creams or oils to calm the skin will prevent against clogged pores which could boost infection rates.
