The five best heart rate monitors for 2013 have been named by the testers at the Heart Rate Watch Company.
"This is always a tough list to come up with but it always includes the larger manufacturers because they consistently provide the most reliable products", says Rusty Squire, President of the Heart Rate Watch Company. He adds, "It always turns over a few surprises".
#1 - Suunto Ambit - This watch by itself invented a whole new category of rugged outdoor adventure heart rate monitors that add every conceivable feature along with consistent expandability through firmware updates. "It's the best watch we have ever tested", says Squire. He adds, "It's not cheap but you get what you pay for - it will last".
#2 - Polar RS800CX - This watch and the Polar RS400 are consistently seen on the wrists of world-class athletes and provide R&R heart rate data. "These are a favorite of human performance labs for a reason", says Squire. He adds, "Even today, 5 years after their introduction, few, if any, other manufacturers have designed anything better".
#3 - Garmin Forerunner 610 - Garmin 610 was also a bit of an innovator in that it used touch screen navigation to replace buttons. It is a reliable performer, delivers great maps and even provides training load data. "I used this all summer and loved it", says Squire. He adds, "It's only weakness is total battery life in GPS mode of about 7 hours".
#4 Polar RCX5 - This triathlon and multi-sport watch offered a nice sport interface, zoom features, pacing features and a whole new design for Polar. "I used this a lot in the summer of 2012 and really enjoyed it with the G5 GPS sensor and clip", says Squire. He adds, "Taking the weight of a lithium-ion battery and the GPS off your wrist makes the watch so much lighter and women especially appreciate that".
#5 Polar H7 and Wahoo Blue HR Bluetooth Smart compatible chest straps - These two chest straps work directly with any iPhone 5 or 4S along with a Bluetooth Smart compatible app. "The Polar H7 has its Polar Fit app and there are many Bluetooth Smart compatible apps to use with Wahoo Blue HR", says Squire.
"It's a diverse list of the top products from some of the best manufacturers in the fitness industry, we hope you enjoy it", says Squire.
