On March 5, Linus Bike responds to an article published by Wicked Local regarding new bike storage and zoning regulations proposed for the city of Cambridge, Mass.
According to Wicked Local, the Cambridge Community Development Department (CDD) proposed new rules on bicycle parking and storage. In an effort to promote green living, the CDD wants the city to increase the amount of commuting made with bicycles. The article says the CDD wants to boost accessibility of parking for bikers and raise the number of people commuting on bikes to 10 percent.
Wicked Local reports that bicycling in the city has doubled in the past 10 years. The CDD’s proposal includes a requirement that newly constructed buildings must section off a parking area for bikers.
If the buildings cannot provide “short-term” bicycling parking on their lot, then they must provide funds for parking arrangements on public land, Wicked Local reports.
China Reevers, a representative of the commuter bike manufacturer Linus Bikes, says the idea to provide improved parking and storage options for bikers is necessary. “As biking becomes increasingly popular, safe and compact storage areas are hard to come by,” she says. “There is a real need for cities to build areas where bikers can park their bikes safely.”
Reevers also says there are companies that specialize in building storage racks for bikers and building owners should research how they can utilize these companies to build bicycle-parking areas. “Thule is one of the bike storage systems we recommend. Their products are dependable and get the job done.”
Reevers adds that storage will always be an issue for bicyclists and a deterrent for those interested in commuting by bike. “More people would consider biking to work if they knew they had a reliable place to store their bike. I would recommend businesses to follow the new CDD regulations by purchasing Thule bike racks, or building stationary parking slots,” Reevers says.
