WEA Trust Continues Gains in School District, Other Markets

Pricing, products, and customer service, make the Trust a strong insurance competitor

The WEA Trust, a Wisconsin created—Wisconsin based, not-for-profit company created to provide quality health insurance at competitive prices to Wisconsin’s school districts, continues to report new business gains throughout Wisconsin.

The Trust reported this week that it gained the business of the City of Menasha, Village of Whitefish Bay, Village of Hales Corners, North Shore Fire Department, Adams County, and as well as the return of the Kaukauna, Bangor, Elkhorn, and Crandon School Districts, among many others.

“It comes down to who can provide product variations and options to help districts and public employers lower their costs while providing second-to-none service—and the Trust is that company,” said Trust Vice President Kathryne McGowan.

“The Trust returns 93 cents of premium dollars back in the form of health care, far exceeding the 85% mandated by federal law,” said McGowan. “We also administer COBRA benefits at no additional cost to our customers, another advantage that has resulted in districts and other public employers giving the Trust a closer look.”

Specializing in the school district market for over 40 years, it was a natural fit for the Trust to expand into the public employer market in recent years, now offering the same quality benefits to counties and municipalities in the state.

Further, the Trust, in just three years of serving this market, has become the third largest health plan, in terms of enrollment among state and local employees covered by the Wisconsin Group Health Insurance Program (State Health Plan) with over 30,000 members, according to results recently released by the Wisconsin Department of Employee Trust Fund (ETF).

For the 2013 benefit year, the Trust was designated by the Wisconsin Group Insurance Board (GIB) as a Tier 1 option—the lowest-cost tier—in 56 counties. In order to be placed in Tier 1, the Trust must be competitive in pricing for the Uniform Benefits offered in the State Health Plan.

The Trust continues to play a prominent role in the school district, public employer, and State Health Plan markets.
