Kettlebell Expert Lorna Kleidman Weighs In On Common Kettlebell Mistakes

Following the publication of a Men's Fitness article outlining some of the pitfalls of using kettlebells, Lorna Kleidman offers her expert opinion on common mistakes made by people who are new to exercising with kettlebells.

On March 11, three-time kettlebell champion Lorna Kleidman offers her perspective on a new Men’s Fitness article describing mistakes that novices make when exercising with kettlebells.

An interview with Mike Stehle, owner of the website Training Room Online, describes several common fitness mistakes that people make. Some common errors include “not following proper movement progression” and standing in the wrong posture – it's important to maintain a neutral spine and not take too wide a stance, says Stehle. In addition, he recommends that kettlebellers don't try “to get too fancy,” saying that “attempting to invent new movements outside of the basics [doesn't] provide a reward worth the risk.”

The article claims that when people become enthusiastic about trying a new form of exercise, they often pay too much attention to the end game and ignore the importance of the journey to arrive there. Stehle comments, “If something doesn't feel right, there's a good chance it's not. Stop and put the bell down before paying the price.”

Lorna Kleidman (who, in addition to her personal achievements, has several years of experience training others to use kettlebells) agrees with Stehle’s tips. “It’s great that people are catching on to the benefits of kettlebell exercises, but it’s important to remember to pace yourself when you first start. I especially agree with the point that it's important to monitor your progression and enjoy the process – don't focus too much on end results. That’s the best way to get the maximum benefits without overdoing it. An injury is obviously a terribly discouraging setback.” Kleidman adds that people should learn to perform the movements under the expert care of a qualified trainer in order to avoid mistakes that are typically caused by ignorance and are easily preventable. “Once you have the knack, kettlebells are a fun and easy regimen to maintain.”
