Olive Oil Company, Bellucci Premium, Commends New Olive Oil Certification At Hebrew University

On March 8, Natalie Sexenian, the marketing manager for Bellucci Premium, responds to an article published by the Olive Oil Times regarding the Hebrew University in Jerusalem’s effort to enforce olive oil certification.

According to the Olive Oil Times, students at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem are now able to become certified experts in all things related to olive oil.

The Olive Oil Times reports that there have been a lot of olive oil adulteration scandals in Israel and that the olive oil labeled as pure or extra virgin sometimes also has sunflower or cheaper oils mixed into it.

Introducing the olive oil certification course is an attempt at saving the industry by encouraging people to learn how to judge oil quality, reports Olive Oil Times. The course will also teach students about the guidelines for olive oil set forth by the International Olive Council.

According to Olive Oil Times, Israel is reliant on the production and sale of olive oil. The country produced about 18,000 tons of olive oil last year and has been growing significantly each year. The Olive Oil Times adds that the Jewish people believe olive trees and olive oil hold sacred meaning and symbolize abundance and health.

Sexenian said olive oil is an essential product to life in the Mediterranean and Near East. “In Israel, as well as Italy, olive oil is used in most dishes,” she said. “It’s a healthy substance to cook with and it’s something that has been used for thousands of years. It represents a lifestyle and I think this certification course is a great way for people to learn about a product that’s been the center of culture since ancient times.”

“There are a lot of olive oil companies claiming to sell natural olive oil, but actually use other oils instead,” she said. “It saves them money, but they are still marketing themselves as pure extra virgin olive oil. It’s fraud and hopefully this course will inspire other countries that are prevalent in the olive oil market to provide similar classes. It’s important to know what makes olive oil pure and how you can tell if it’s real.”
