Imhoff and Associates announced today their support of the Respect for Marriage Act (RMA) that repeals legislation DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). By joining other leading U.S employers across the nation who comprise of the Business Coalition for DOMA Repeal, Imhoff is throwing its full support to end federal discrimination against legally married gay and lesbian couples. Right now, lawfully married same-sex couples are not recognized by the federal government and are denied more than 1,100 federal rights and benefits, such as filing taxes jointly, taking unpaid leave to care for a sick spouse, and receiving Social Security survivor benefits. Plus, it can be worse for those in the military. Gay and Lesbian service members and their families are further disadvantaged because DOMA forces the U.S. military to discriminate against their marriages.
Work to Overturn Discriminatory Law
If passed, the new legislation will require the federal government to equally apply its policy of looking to the states in determining what legal relationships are eligible for federal benefits.
It will also give same-sex couples the reinsurance that recognized benefits in one state won’t be necessarily discounted in another state that honors the union. So far, six states and the District of Columbia have acknowledged that allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry promotes the welfare of not only the couples, but also their children, their communities, and society as a whole.
