On March 8, Colle Farmers Market issues a statement in response to an article published on the Nanowerk website discussing the pros and cons of organic farming methods in relation to climate protection.
The Nanowerk article claims that between ten and twelve percent of greenhouse gases are directly related to the agricultural sector. “A recent study has investigated – for the first time – the full range of factors that contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, namely soil and climate conditions, the agricultural model and the farming intensity on both organic and conventional holdings. The study has enabled scientists to develop a new model that will allow agricultural landholders to determine and improve their climate balance.”
According to the article, only crop and dairy farms were studied in the data collection process. The article quotes that “scientists recorded all relevant climate gas streams during the entire production process, including methane, nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide.”
Fossil fuels are reported to be the single largest source of the carbon dioxide emissions that come from fertilizers, pesticides, and farming equipment. The study's proposed remedy to cut down on emissions varied depending upon the type of farm. For example, dairy farms were urged to produce their own feed in order to cut down on soybean based emissions.
The comparison between organic and conventional farming is brought to the fore with a number of findings. Organic farming was found to be the most efficient method of farming as it pertained to energy efficiency, reports the article.
Colle Farmers Market offers a response in reaction to the findings supporting organic farming’s energy efficiency. Colle promotes organic farming because of its comparatively environment friendly impact, as well as the increased safety and nutritional density of organic foods. Additionally, Colle points out that the varying emissions from different organic farmers encourage more communication between organic farmers to explore ways to refine their methods, so as to further benefit the environment and climate.
Colle is an E-Commerce enabled farmers market community that is passionate about sustainable consumption and responsible conservation. The Colle movement is dedicated to connecting natural product vendors, organic farmers and all people who are living an organic and natural lifestyle.
