On September 18, 2012, a law firm filed a lawsuit against NuvaRing on behalf of a woman who suffered a deep vein thrombosis while using NuvaRing. The lawsuit was filed in New Jersey Superior Court, Bergen County, and named Merck & Co. Organon USA, Inc., Organon Pharmaceuticals USA, Inc., N.V. Organon, Schering Plough Corporation and Akzo Nobel, NV as Defendants. (BER-L-007242-12). Deep vein thrombosis is a serious, life-threatening type of blood clot.

The Bellweather trials for Nuvaring have been delayed until July 2013. The Multidistrict Litigation (MDL - 1964) was created in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri. In these lawsuits, the plaintiffs are claiming that the manufacturer, Merck & Co., and its subsidiary, Organon Pharmaceuticals, did not adequately warn patients about the elevated risk of developing blood clots.

Hormonal birth control can create an elevated risk for developing blood clots, as documented by the FDA, but studies conducted by British Medical Journal on NuvaRing present a higher risk of developing blood clots over using other forms of birth control available on the market*. In June of 2012, Research published in The New England Journal of Medicine found that women who used NuvaRing were 2.5 to 3 times more likely to experience heart attacks and strokes compared to women who used other types of hormonal birth control**. The same study published in the British Medical Journal found that NuvaRing users are 90% more likely to suffer a dangerous blood clot than women taking other oral contraceptives*.

Blood clots as mentioned above, is just one possible side effect in using NuvaRing. Other potential adverse side effects as stated on their “Risks and Side Effects” page by the Merck & Co., NuvaRing effects may be as commonplace as vaginal secretion, headache, weight gain, nausea, vomiting, change in appetite, abdominal cramps and bloating, depression, and/or skin rash*. The more severe possible side effects listed on the Nuvaring “Risks and Side Effects” page also include stroke, heart attack, high blood pressure and heart disease, cancer of the reproductive organs and breast, gallbladder disease, liver tumors, and lipic metabolism and inflammation of the pancreas, vaginal infections and irritation*.
