Vanessa J. Herman has joined Pace University as Assistant Vice President for Government and Community Relations. Herman brings with her more than 20 years of experience in government, community, and public relations.
“Vanessa brings to Pace a rich background in government and community relations from both private industry and academia,” said Robert G.M. Keating, Pace’s Vice President for Strategic Initiatives. “Her experience, energy, and enthusiasm will serve Pace well and we all look forward to working with her.”
Most recently, Herman was Director of Government and External Relations at Applied DNA Sciences (APDN), a bio-tech company that utilizes botanical DNA as a security measure and criminal deterrent. Her responsibilities at APDN, located on the campus of Stony Brook University, included creating legislative and community relations agendas; identifying, developing, and overseeing strategic business partnerships; and identifying federal and state grant opportunities.
Prior to joining APDN in 2011, Herman was the Assistant Director of Governmental Relations at Stony Brook for more than 12 years. During this time she served as the university’s federal lobbyist and was responsible for the creation and implementation of federal legislative initiatives. She also secured government appropriations, monitored federal and state higher-education policy, and promoted significant educational legislative issues. She interacted directly with elected officials at all levels of government, raising the university’s profile and advancing its legislative agenda.
“Pace is a dynamic university that is well situated to meet the current challenges facing higher education, and continue to grow in leaps and bounds,” Herman said. “I am excited, honored, and proud to be a part of this prestigious university.”
From 1991 to 1999, Herman served as Press Secretary, Executive Assistant, Director of Community Relations and campaign staff for former U.S. Senator Alfonse D’Amato (R-NY).
Herman has a B.A. in Political Science/Sociology and an M.A. in Literature, both from Stony Brook University. She and her husband, Mike Donohue, a Master Sergeant with the New York Army National Guard, live in Long Island and Manhattan.
