On March 15, Sara Greenstone, a spokesperson from NewVo Beauty, responds to the Philippine Daily Inquirer about the unhealthy chemicals in shampoos and hair products.

According to the Philippine Daily Inquirer, the global spa community is joining the movement to go green. Many spas have already taken steps to help the environment by saving water, using recycled or organic products and cutting down on using artificial light.

The Philippine Daily Inquirer reports that there are many beauty and hair products that contain harmful chemicals that can irritate skin. These chemicals break down skin’s protective properties and have the potential to cause blemishes, wrinkles or rashes.

Greenstone says most of the beauty products, from shampoo to moisturizers, include dangerous chemicals. “The amount of these chemicals are usually minute, so the Food and Drug Administration permits them,” she says. “However, when you really look at the ingredients and educate yourself on the dangers of these chemicals, you won’t want a drop of it.”

The Philippine Daily Inquirer reports that more than 60 percent of what people put on their bodies is absorbed into the body. Some of these chemicals like parabens, formaldehyde and sulfates are dangerous and could cause cancer.

“Parabens have been known to cause different kinds of cancer, especially skin cancer,” Greenstone says. “All of those chemicals are being absorbed into your body. I recommend using all natural hair products like Pureology. Those products make my hair healthy and they don’t contain sulfates or parabens.”

Sulfates and sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), which is considered a carcinogen, are ingredients that shampoos contain for foam-building properties, reports Philippine Daily Inquirer and could cause skin allergies.

Greenstone advises people to look at labels for harmful ingredients. “Make sure you always look at the labels,” she says. “Ingredients like to hide within labels, so just be aware of what you’re buying and putting on your body.”
