Bellucci Premium Urges Consumers to Protect Heart Health with Extra Virgin Olive Oil

On March 18, Bellucci Premium Toscano responds to new findings from a Spanish research team which found that a Mediterranean diet rich in nuts and extra virgin olive oil can help defend against heart attack and stroke.

According to The Olive Oil Times, a recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that “a Mediterranean diet supplemented with olive oil or nuts can reduce the risk of having a heart attack or stroke by 30 percent, compared to a low fat diet.”

The study examined “over 7,000 participants who had a high risk for cardiovascular disease,” dividing them into three “dietary intervention groups” and following their progress for almost five years, reports Olive Oil Times. The control group was put on a basic low-fat diet, while the other two groups were put on a Mediterranean diet supplemented with either mixed nuts or extra virgin olive oil, respectively.

According to the Olive Oil Times, "The researchers noted rates of heart attacks, stroke or cardiovascular related deaths. The results of the study showed that the group that received the Mediterranean diet intervention with olive oil or nuts had a 30 percent reduced incidence of major cardiovascular events."
