The evolving telecommunications industry has compelled recruiting firm Catapult Resources to undergo an evolution of its own.
Catapult Resources, based in Queensbury, N.Y., has expanded to include information technology searches to its service offerings. Established in 1995, the firm previously focused on telecom placements.
“I have found that telecom as I know it has transitioned into more of the IT world,” said Tim Harris, the firm’s Managing Partner and Senior Technical Recruiter. “I find myself working to help companies with more IT positions.”
The firm can now handle a wide variety of telecom and IT placements, including, but not limited to Network Engineers, Storage Engineers, Storage Administrators, Storage Architects, Test Engineers, Software Developers, Programmers, VoIP Engineers, Sales Engineers, CIOs, Engineers, Directors, IT Managers and Directors, Data Center Architects and Engineers, etc. Most of the staff has worked “in the trenches” in the industries they support. For example, Tim Harris spent many years in the telecom business, where he held both technical and managerial positions. Cindy Harris, who manages the firm with Tim and has a Masters of Science in Mathematics, managed an IT department and was a Software Developer and Director of Training for a software company.
The firm has the ability to place both direct hire candidates and contractors. Tim Harris hopes the addition of IT placement services will increase his contract staffing business.
“There’s a lot more of contract staffing in IT than in telecom, and I want to do more contract staffing,” Harris said. “I know there’s a lot of contracting going on, and I plan to get in the middle of it.”
Contract staffing is particularly popular in IT because much of the work is project based, particularly on the infrastructure side. Providers in the ever-growing cloud computing industry need network engineers, network administrators, storage engineers, storage administrators, storage architects, etc., to build the data centers needed to deliver their services and store clients’ data. Because building these data centers is a finite project, these positions are better filled by a contractor than a direct hire, Harris said.
Contract staffing is also proving to be a viable option for workers. The perception is that they can make more money, and they also like that they can try out an employer before making a direct hire commitment.
“I’m seeing more and more people enjoy going the contract route, particularly if they can get benefits,” Harris said.
Catapult Resources’ contractors are offered a full menu of benefits through the firm’s contract staffing back-office, Top Echelon® Contracting, Inc. (TEC) Those benefits include medical insurance through Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, dental, vision, and life insurance, and 401(k). They also enjoy a regular paycheck with the option of direct deposit and the protection of Unemployment Insurance and Workers’ Compensation. Catapult Resources has been working with TEC since 2009.
“Tim has always been very prompt, professional, and friendly to work with and he strives to come up with top notch talent for his clients,” said Julie Majors, Lead Contract Staffing Administrator for TEC.
