On March 16, 2013, Rapid Recovery Solution responds to the New Jersey Attorney General’s new initiatives to raise consumer awareness about debt and accounts receivable collection as a part of National Consumer Protection Week.
According to New Jersey Today, the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs and the Attorney General have developed several new resources for consumers, releasing a Cyber Security Handbook, a Debt Collection Handbook as well as an Understanding Debt Collection video. These efforts seek to equip consumers with the necessary educational tools to protect themselves against fraud. Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa states, “As aggressive and unflagging as we are in our role of enforcing the laws that protect New Jersey’s consumers against fraud and abusive practices, we are just as committed to help consumers protect themselves through education and awareness.”
In addition to the distribution of the educational materials, the Division of Consumer of Affairs also conducts presentations about fraud and debt collection throughout the year for New Jersey residents. The Cyber Security Handbook explains how to protect personal and private information that is available on the Internet, computers, smartphones and other electronic devices. The handbook also expands on common methods used by identity thieves, including phishing and social engineering. Other topics the handbook details are “protection against malware; protecting one’s personal information when using web browsers and mobile devices; and awareness about online predators and cyber bullying.”
The Debt Collection Handbook and the Understanding Debt Collection Video both contain “important information for any consumers who owe money, or who have been contacted by a debt collector about money the consumer does not believe he or she actually owes.”
While the “Fair Debt Collection Practices Act protects consumers by prohibiting debt collectors from using abusive, unfair, or deceptive practices”, the Division of Consumer Affairs believes protecting one’s self from illegal practices of debt collection as well as theft of information comes from the consumer, according to the article. The Acting Director of Consumer Affairs touts that the “new booklets and the new video provide practical information that every consumer can use for self-protection,” as “[t]hese topics are particularly relevant today, as more and more individuals and families rely on the Internet to make purchases, and many also face the possibility of outstanding debt issues.”
