On March 20, 2013, Bellucci Premium issues a response to the news that Spain’s olive oil industry is performing poorly this quarter.
According to The Olive Oil Times, “Spain’s olive oil production is down 62 percent for the first four months of this season compared to the last one.”
The Olive Oil Agency reports that Spain’s olive output from October 2012 to January 2013 was “just over 543,000 tons,” compared to “more than 1.4 million for the same period in 2011/12.” Spain’s sales and yield are also lower this season, says the article, while the country’s olive and olive oil imports have doubled.
The Olive Oil Times reports that the Spanish table olive market has seen an unexpected expansion in India, where there has been a growing demand. It is reported that compared to the previous year, Spain’s exports of table olives to India increased by “nearly a quarter” in 2012, during which “over 1.1 million kilos” of Spanish olives were exported to the country.
Natalie Sexenian, Marketing Manager for Bellucci Premium, comments on the Spanish olive oil market, saying that the country’s setbacks will likely affect the Italian olive oil industry, too. “Spain’s losses will affect the entire European olive oil market as their import-export ratio resettles. Although the numbers for this season’s output are disturbing, it’s worth noting that we’re comparing them with the previous year, during which Spain’s harvest reached a record high.”
