Diagnostic errors in the doctor's office may put thousands of patients at serious risk of complications each year, a new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) shows. According to the Feb. 25 JAMA article, these types of diagnostic errors may actually lead to more patient injuries and deaths compared to other more-publicized mistakes such as surgery and medication errors.
The study states that diagnostic errors injure or kill about 150,000 people a year in the United States. Researchers used electronic health records to track 190 diagnostic errors made during primary care visits and found that in each of those cases, the patient was hospitalized or came to the emergency room within two weeks of the misdiagnosis. According to the article, pneumonia, heart failure, kidney failure and cancer accounted for between 5 and 7 percent of conditions doctors misdiagnosed.
There are several suggestions researchers make as part of the study including providing better training for doctors. However, the report affirms that patients would benefit from coming prepared with information and questions for their doctor's appointment and not take their diagnosis for granted.
It is important that patients be continually vigilant when it comes to monitoring their health and symptoms, said New York personal injury lawyer Kenneth A. Wilhelm. "It is crucial that patients pay attention to the red flags. For example, if the symptoms worsen or if new symptoms surface, they should talk to their doctor or return to the doctor's office before the situation becomes serious."
Along with misdiagnosis, delayed diagnosis or failure to diagnose a health condition can prove devastating for patients, Wilhelm says. "These types of diagnostic errors take away valuable recovery time from patients. In some cases, it may be too late for patients to get the treatment they need to survive. This is an important study that shines the light on the importance of prompt and accurate diagnosis of medical conditions. Patients who suffer injuries and complications from being misdiagnosed do have legal rights."
