On March 21, Muscular Development Magazine representative Brian Turner responds to an article published on the Daily Herald, which details the intensity of the Fittest Loser workouts, and advises contestants to eat pre-workout snacks for fuel.
The Fittest Loser is an annual challenge sponsored by the Daily Herald outside of Chicago. In its fifth year, the Fittest Loser Challenge measures the success of 23 five-member teams in terms of weight loss and health assessments. Registered local nurses screen contestants for blood pressure, cholesterol, BMI and stroke risk. The contest runs for 12 weeks.
According to the Daily Herald, the Fittest Losers have been participating in some grueling workouts with strict trainers. One contestant, Marianne Costales-Roman, says her trainer conditions her muscles with a foam roller. In the article, Costales-Roman says her trainer rolls over her arms and legs with a foam roller, which releases toxins in her muscles.
Brian Turner, a spokesperson for the Muscular Development Magazine, says the intense workouts are good for weight loss, but eating a pre-workout snack could help the contestants with their stamina and post-workout soreness.
“I can tell these contestants are working hard and they are definitely making progress,” Turner says. “However, they could get more out of their workout by preparing pre-workout shakes containing protein and potassium. They could make a simple shake with nonfat Greek yogurt, milk and even some fruit like bananas to add taste.”
Turner says protein is extremely important to consume before exercising. “The yogurt and the milk contain a lot of protein, which builds muscle and could help contestants power through sets,” he says. “Protein could also prolong their stamina during an intense workout. Potassium has muscle-relaxing properties, so it’s good to take after they are done working out and or beforehand to reduce soreness.”
