It has been reported in HVP that Mullins is of the opinion that the drop in skilled tradespeople reported in a new survey is not down to the economic climate but rather the state of the UK education system. He believes that years of insufficient training opportunities for the skilled traditional trades are responsible for the figures, which showed that the number of skilled tradespeople in the UK dropped by 7% in 2012.
The survey, conducted by Simply Business also revealed that plumbers were the worst hit with a 25% drop in numbers over the last 4 years. However rather than blaming the recession as was the most common reaction, Mullins claims “vocational training became seen as sub-standard and secondary to academic-led learning in the past 20 years”.
Best known for their London emergency plumbers, the team at Emergency Plumber were naturally interested to hear these views. Having just reached an impressive 300 tradesmen, they were keen to share their thoughts on the issue.
“Whilst it is clear that the economic situation will have made it harder for some businesses, especially smaller ones, to employ plumbers, we agree with Charlie Mullins that the education system could be improved to offer young people more opportunities in this area.
“The standard route for higher education now sees people more likely to go straight to university to get a good education, however, there are other great opportunities to be had in the form of skilled trades. At Emergency Plumber, we offer plumbers throughout the country including places like Oxford, Southampton and Newcastle. Those struggling to find a fully trained and registered plumber in their area can contact us on 07510 81 43 11.”
